#42 How is it October already?

Posted on by .

Wow, this year is flying by me once again!

I have been busy since the last posting. These are just the finishes but I have a few other projects in the works.

This is the lap quilt I finished for my Granddad (and haven’t sent yet).

I used it for quilting practice and I’m quite happy about how it looks.

The orange quilt is completed and waiting to be a Christmas present. I doubt the recipient visits this site, and if they do, they won’t know it’s theirs 😉

This one….

I *think* this one is around 26 year old.  It was just the center, the star portion. I added the blue background and border just this month.

20161009_105436_wm

Check out the awful piecing! I giggle because it isn’t so bad, in fact at the time it was my best effort.

V20161008_150021_wm

I remember using a cardboard template and an ink pen to trace out the diamonds. I don’t think rotary cutters and mats were a “thing” yet. If they were, either I hadn’t heard of them and/or couldn’t afford them. I think I did pretty well considering! The fabrics weren’t all fitting for quilting by today’s standards but they were all I had.

20161008_150031_wm

I’ve often thought of ridding myself of this “monstrosity” but I’m so glad I didn’t. I kept it for the memories of learning to quilt, financially struggling, and sewing with my son on my lap.

20161015_085821_wm

My son is now grown and I can afford the best quilting cottons. I have improved in my skill sets but still learning every day. The memories in this quilt are priceless to me. When I’m no longer here, this will belong to my son.

For weeks, the song “Swingin’ on a Star” by Frank Sinatra has been on a loop in my head. Great song and sound advice, so I think it’s a fitting name for this quilt. But memories of piecing it with my boy in my lap while watching old reruns of “Hawaii 5 0” late at night stuck with me, too. Jeff has always liked making me laugh and he learned that if he said “book em Dano”, I’d giggle quite hard!

I give you “Dano’s Swinging on a star”.

No quilt is complete until the inspectors have a once over. Baby is looking for loose threads in the picture above and Sissy thinks it makes a great backdrop for her newest close up.

Meanwhile, this is what I’m taking a break from this weekend. Ah, homeownership. The sump pump died and no one noticed until I stepped downstair to sew the other night. I hadn’t turned a light on yet and stepped in a cold puddle. I wanted to clean the basement anyway…

#40 Chain Stitcher Joins the Herd

Posted on by .

This big ole pile-of-red is part of the secret sewing I’ve been doing. I still can’t share with you all the details but it’s now being quilted and is king sized. Currently, the thread tension and breakage while quilting this one is making me crazy. I may have to remove it and start all over with resetting my longarm tension. Ack!

mountain of red

I can share the quilt I finished before the red one. This one is for the family reunion I’m attending on Sunday.

raffle quilt

I had no issues with quilting this one. I used a simple meander because I needed to finish it quickly.

raffle quilt 3

The top was finished quite some time ago and was the result of playing with a sampler box of Jinny Beyer prints that were acquired from an estate sale. I still have enough left for a smaller project!

raffle quilt 2

I purchased this beauty from Goodwill online auctions. They can be hit or miss when it comes to shipping, but this one came from the Indianapolis store and they are pretty good about careful packing. There is slight damage to the very old case but it can be repaired. The needle bar had twisted a bit and a few new scuffs to the cloth plate seem to be the only damage to the machine itself. I don’t know if the needle had already been broken but it is now so I’ve ordered more. They take shorter needles than my other machines. I haven’t tried the motor yet but the wheel turns freely. Once I’ve taken it apart and cleaned it, I’ll use my featherweight cords to try her out. Crossing finger!

24-80

I found this helpful when trying to locate the best deal for new machine needles. If you have problems finding needles for vintage machines, you may be able to use this chart to find them under different identifiers. ISMACS is one of my best VSM friends!

Here’s a cute picture of 3 of my fur babies, coexisting in peace for just a few moments. ha! Sissy (the middle one) is the peace keeper and all the dogs love her. Fuzzy (on the left) can be quite mean and Mojo (right) is a sensitive soul <3

basket of fun

I renewed my driver’s license the other day so I wore contacts. I don’t wear them often anymore because I’m dependent on bifocals! So I stopped and bought some readers and quite like them. Pretty danged fabulous, don’t you think?

On Monday, I hit the -50 pounds mark. I’ve been walking on air all week! If you’re on Lose It!, friend me 🙂

The Good, the Bad and the Gorgeous

Posted on by .

First for the bad. Yesterday morning, as I was letting the puppies out in the back yard for potty breaks, I heard sirens. They sounded close but I really thought they were down the road and around the corner out of sight. I couldn’t see across the street where they were. I do remember chills down my spine and a very uneasy feeling. As the puppies came in, my thoughts turned to other things.

Later in the early afternoon, hubs came into the cave and asked if I knew what our neighbor’s daughter was talking about on Facebook. It seems her mother had passed away.

Brenda

I love this picture of Brenda. It almost captures her beauty, her sense of humor and her friendly and radiant style. She was just a little over a year older than me and we shared a love of sitting around a bonfire, drinking wine and laughing. She was one of the first friends we made in our neighborhood. I still can’t believe she’s gone.

She had knee surgery last Wednesday and her family says she hadn’t felt well the past few days. An autopsy is pending because they aren’t sure why she died. I’m just speechless.

Now, the good stuff.

Its prettier than I thought it would be. I think I have to keep it!

OK folks, this is what happens when you lose weight and your under wired bra doesn’t fit anymore. And you go bowling.

bowling bruise

At first, I didn’t know how this happened. It was much worse than this photo shows. But then, the next day at work, I figured it out when my already sore arm got poked some more. Good thing I kept my “skinny to fat” clothes. I have a size for each stage but this time I’ll be getting rid of the clothes as I shrink. Great incentive to work at maintaining loss!

bunny trio

Because the hubs had let the grass get long, we found these. There were 5 but only 3 made it to this picture. Sadly, Baby found them a few days ago and shook one before my son knew what had happened.  We thought it would be ok, but hubs removed it from the nest this morning. The final 2 are snuggling to each other with opened eyes and ears almost fully erect. I’m sure they’ll leave the nest this week. I read they leave around 3 weeks which is very surprising to me. They are about the size of a fat chipmunk right now! I may regret them once the garden is in but I need to fence it in anyway.

last night, we went out to celebrate our 11th anniversary. (May 1st)

We had a great time with my work mates, Steve and Becky…

And our bestie neighbors Cheri and Butch!

I broke my diet for the night and enjoyed a degree of enebriation.

The answer to the question I asked was 2 pounds. What was my question? How much weight can one person gain in just one bad night of eating. Haha!

Finally, the gorgeous

noir rose bag

I made myself a new bag. I used my favorite pattern but made it wider.  I also made a matching wallet but you’ll have to wait to see it!

I’ve been saving this fabric for some special project. I almost bypassed it, saving it again in a stash where I don’t get to see it much and enjoy it. Especially with what happened to my friend Brenda this week, I am reminded that today is a special occasion. Tomorrow isn’t promised. Every day should be cherished. Even at work 😉

#36 Finding My Balance

Posted on by .

Lately, my focus is on food. What to eat and not eat. What tastes good and not so much. Pinterest has been a help but I’ve found a few stinkers along the way.

Kale chips are delicious but if you don’t follow the recipe, you could end up with something that reminds me of munching on fall leaves fresh out of the yard (not that I would know first hand, I’m just guessing here).

20160409_125751

If you decide to make kale chips, keep in mind they must be rubbed COMPLETELY with oil. Not drippy wet with oil, but a good coating. If you have tossed you kale with a couple of teaspoons of oil, there will be enough on your fingers to spread it around.

20160409_125746

This batch was sprinkled with ranch dressing seasoning. Yes, there are chemicals but I didn’t care. I needed a potato chip diversion and this did the trick! I also made a sea salt and pepper version that hubs loved. I wasn’t a big fan but they were ok.

Balsamic tofu.

20160408_185017

Oy. This was so gawd awful I couldn’t eat all of it. Now if you like very vinegary, sour foods, this is for you. I do like vinegar and sour but I couldn’t hang with this one. I followed the pinterest instructions to a T, even marinating overnight. The brussels sprouts were wonderful so there’s that. Also, my vegetarian chef step-daughter told me tofu will always be rubbery when baked unless is slathered in fats of some sort. Good info to keep in mind. I shall be making a new pinterest board, “Gawd awful recipes I’ve tried”. This one will be at the top!

Cauliflower tortillas.

20160422_170640_wm

Looks like scrambled eggs, right? I think this one’s my fault or I just need to make a few adjustments. I don’t think I used enough cauliflower or pressed enough liquid from them once cooked. I should’ve known when I couldn’t press them into patties for baking. They were delicious and I will make them again. My intent was to make little pizza like creations.

20160422_171203_wm

I ended up with something that resembled a salad. I don’t normally use cheese because I’m allergic to milk products (and have always eaten them anyway) but I needed the calories and really miss pizza. Sometimes you have to compromise to get through the tough parts! This was a tomato, avacado, spinach and feta cheese topping for my cauliflower tortillas. 500 calories of heaven for this shrinking woman!

I had the pleasure of having 2 chefs cook my dinner Thursday.

dueling chefs

My step daughter and her magnificent husband have moved back to Ohio! We are over the moon to have them so close. And one of the perks….

20160421_183930_wm

I loved this view. Seeing artful creation in my kitchen and knowing it’s going to be delicious!

20160421_184159_wm

Halibut steak with buerre blanc sauce and mushroom and asparagus risotto.

Jesse placed the sauce off to the side in case we didn’t like it. I want this sauce on everything I eat from this day forward!  This meal was to die for but sadly way over my calorie count for the day. I figured I have been strict for the past 5 weeks so one night wouldn’t undo what I’ve accomplished. I’m now down 24 pounds and steadily moving forward!

A few weeks ago, I found this fabric at Joann.

20160407_144201

Yes, this is one fabric. I love that its a different print on each side. I don’t know what the fabric content is, so I washed it in hot water just in case it would shrink or otherwise change before I make something with it. I need a spring and fall coat and I have just the pattern for it. A long, hooded coat made to be reverseable. Just my style! More on this later…

My sister asked me to make a quilt for a raffle to help save her friend. Sher Snedeker needs a double lung transplant to save her life and our health care here in America leaves much to be desired. This quilt will be raffled off to help her cause.

Please visit her facebook page and consider helping my sister’s dear friend.

Awhile back, I talked about a quilt top that I found in a stash of stuff purchased through Craigslist. It was very poorly constructed and I asked you all if I should leave it as is or redo it. The consensus at the time was to leave it as is and honor the quilter’s efforts. Friends, I was going to, I really was. Then as I was preparing to make a back for it and load it onto my frame, I discovered things that couldn’t be ignored. There were huge spots of discoloration. I couldn’t remove them and they smelled awful when wet. So I removed them with the intention of taking enough rows off to replace the missing pieces. Ok, so hours later it was all in pieces. When I emerged from the seam ripper dust, I had all these little triangles! Yes, I took it all apart.

20160421_123528_wm

It still isn’t perfect but it will be useable and pretty, I think. It in the process of hand binding. More pictures when it’s finished.

Today, after I record the podcast, I need to finish up this beauty for a client.

20160422_144706_wm

The baby isn’t born yet but when he is, he will be sleeping with Dr. Seuss. The blocks are all cross stitched by his family and friends of the family.  The grandmother bought the blue fabric but I thought it needed a pop of Dr. Seuss color. I haven’t decided yet whether or not the binding will be black or red and white. Maybe a darker blue? I’ll post it when finished!

I designed the label using an appliqued hat. (those are water spots from my crappy, dying iron)
